PHCN Workers Suspend Strike Threat
Threats by the workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to
embark on an industrial strike today has been suspended. The PHCN workers’
decision to suspend the action followed the commitment of the federal
government to make pay their N57 billion monetisation arrears within 30
days, commencing today with an initial payment of N5 billion.
There was an extended meeting at Sheraton Hotel, Lagos on Sunday night,
between officials of the union and the Minister of State for Power, Mr. Nuhu
Somo Wya. The Minister told the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and
Allied Companies (SSAEAC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees
(NUEE) that the entire sum would be paid within 30 days; commencing today
with the payment of the N5 billion.
The agreement was reportedly signed by the Wya, Managing Director of PHCN,
Mr. Hussein Labo; President of NUEE, Mr. Mansur Musa; General Secretary of
NUEE, Mr. Joe Ajaero; President of the Senior Staff Association of
Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), Mr. Bede Opara and the
Secretary of SSAEAC, Mr. Abiodun Ogunsega.
